FAQs

What is CBT?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a type of psychotherapy that was first developed by Dr Aaron Beck in the 1960’s.

“Cognitive”refers to our thoughts and the way we think about things. “Behavioural” refers to the things that we do. The aim of CBT is to understand patterns in our thinking and our behaviours and how they might link to the way that we are feeling.

Then changes can be made in the way we think about things and what we are doing in order to improve how we feel.

How does it help?

CBT works for lots of different people and problems. It helps by teaching you new and alternative ways to think about things, and new ways to behave that can then lead to you feeling better.

Often we think about things in a negative and unhelpful way. CBT will encourage you to challenge these thoughts and develop more helpful and realistic thoughts.

our greatest weapon against stress is our ability to choose one thought over another”

William James

Also you will learn how to do the things that will help you feel better - make time for the specific activities that nurture your well-being.

How many sessions will I need?

The number of sessions required depends on the individual issues. Typically it is between 5 and 20 weekly sessions lasting 50 minutes.

What can I expect?

CBT aims to help you learn to be your own therapist by teaching you new skills and techniques that you can continue to use when you have completed your sessions.

Most sessions will begin with agenda setting - agreeing together what you want to concentrate on. You will not be told what to do or what to talk about. We will work together collaboratively on your goals.

CBT works best when it involves working on agreed tasks between sessions as well as during them.

What can CBT help with?

CBT has been developed and expanded over the years and the effectiveness of CBT has been proven repeatedly in research. It is widely recommended by national treatment guidelines in the UK (the National Institute for Clinical Excellence - NICE) to treat common mental health difficulties.

These include

  • depression and low mood, including post-natal depression

  • panic attacks

  • phobias

  • health anxiety

  • social anxiety

  • worry or generalised anxiety disorder

  • obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD)

  • post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
